John West is the nom de plume for Gary Edward Hinte, pulled at Hinte Studios, Chatsworth, California early 1970's.

After a tour in the army from 1952 to 1954, he moved to Los Angeles and went to Art Center School on the GI bill. For years, he painted murals for home interior decorators. He developed a business producing original prints in a printmaking studio in downtown LA for art publishers, a business that grew to forty employees before he retired to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Gary Hinte currently lives and paints his images in the town of Belfast on the coast of. He has been an artist in America for the past 60 years, and also has collaborated with artists all over the world including; John Kelly, Paul Blaine Henrie and Connie King.
