The Pontiac Grand Prix entered its second generation with an all-new redesign for 1969. It wasn't just a refresh of the 1968s, it was a complete ground-up rework of the giant muscle-yacht. It was a purpose-built car as envisioned by John Deloreon, the general manager of GM's Pontiac Motor Division of the time.

Deloreon wanted to capture the entire experience of old luxury marques like Duesenberg, Cadillac, and Packard of the 1930s. Monikers like J and SJ, properly befit the Grand Prix name. Royal Pontiac, of Royal Oak, MI was already well known to enthusiastically dabble in the domain of Pontiac performance. The Grand Prix was no exception, despite its massive size.
